"There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. Coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem." John 17:20-21

Anna, a prophetess, who spent her time praying in the temple. We don’t know much about Anna, but she was one of the first people to recognise Jesus and his identity. She was 84 and immersed herself in the things of God day and night.

How did she know?

She regularly spent time in God’s presence and was tuned into His voice.

She spent time with God’s people and so recognised when the one she was waiting for arrived.

Spending time in the temple Anna would have heard the prophecies about the Messiah many times, she knew the Scriptures.

What are we challenged to do?

Follow Anna’s example in spending time listening to the still quiet voice of God, spending time with His people and meditating on His word

Pray today:

  • Lord, help me to tune into your still small voice today. Spend 5 minutes just listening to God with your spirit. Write down any thoughts and pray into them.
  • Pray for discipline to have regular times in prayer and God’s word in 2019. Why not ask someone to be your accountability partner?
