Psalm 1 // Day 7 – Two Roads; One Way

KEY VERSE:

for the Lord knows the way of the righteous,  but the way of the wicked will perish.” Ps 1:6

Back in the day, as I shared on day one of this devotional, I was in a Christian band. We sang cover versions of a Christian rock singer called Larry Norman. He was our hero with his long hair, blues music and radical songs about Jesus. We blasted out his songs in coffee bars (a cool Christian youth gathering of the 80s) all over the north-west of Ireland.

It’s not that we were good. We were actually the only Christian rockers in the area!

One song that I loved to sing was a ballad called ‘ONE WAY’ which had the great lyric ‘two roads emerged in the middle of my life, I heard the poet say. I took the one less travelled on it made the difference, every night and everyday so I say ONE WAY, one way to Heaven’. When you read my testimony from day one about my dream and the paths, you can see why this song would be my anthem.

In verse six, David writes, “for the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.”

The contrast we have been looking at in this Psalm is about the choice. Which path do we want to take? David has painted the picture of the paths using the contrast between the way of the wicked and the way of the righteous.

In the world today, faith is under fire. We are attacked because of the Bible’s view on marriage and sexuality. We are attacked because of the Bible’s view on creation, purity and even generosity! There is one thing that people can’t attack and that is your personal story of your choice to choose the right path.

Your testimony is so powerful because it is your story and your experience of the grace of God in your life. How two roads emerged in the middle of your life and you chose the one less travelled.

Jesus says it like this, You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose that way. But the gateway to life is very narrow and the road is difficult, and only a few ever find it”. MT 7:13-14 (NLT)

Our mission is to lead people onto the narrow way! And one of the best ways to do this is by sharing your story.

As we queue outside shops or as we connect with friends and colleagues on Facebook, pray for opportunities to tell your story of how you came to faith.

  1. Practice telling your story
    • Telling it in 3mins is a great challenge
      1. Start with 1 min on what was I like before I met Jesus.
      2. Then 1 min on how I encountered Jesus
      3. Then 1 min on the difference Jesus has made in your life!
    • Have a LG evening of going round the zoom and sharing your 3 min testimony
  1. Pray for opportunities and open doors for sharing your faith. (Col 4:3)
  1. Take those opportunities! When you pray that prayer assume that anyone who is in the queue with you or contacts you on Facebook or starts a conversation over the hedge from next door is a God-sent opportunity!

PRAYER

Lord, thank you for my faith story. Thank you for saving me from the highway to hell and setting me on the path that leads to you. Help me today to have the courage to share my story with just one person and may that be their first step to choosing the right path in their life.

ACTION STEPS

• What is it that prevents us from sharing our faith with other people and especially with those we love?

• What one step could I do today in sharing my story?
