TODAY’S READING: PSALM 51:6-9
“Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice.” Ps 51:8
I love when we read in scripture the story of the man on the cross next to Jesus. In that last moment he realises the sin that he has committed and that he finds himself in his rightful place - dying for his own iniquities, bearing the punishment of his own sin. We read that he rebukes the other thief and says, “Do you not even fear God, since you are under the same sentence of condemnation? And we indeed are suffering justly, for we are receiving what we deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong.” And he was saying, “Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!” Jesus responds with perhaps the most comforting words this man could now hear. He says “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise.”
This is such a clear representation of what we see written here in Psalm 51. In verse 6 we read, “Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart.” This is talking about God delighting when we carry Him and His desires in our heart. When the truth of who He is and what He has available to us dwells in our most secret chamber. This is because what comes from holding Him in our hearts is this need, as we read in the passage, to be cleansed of our iniquities before the Lord. The Thief saw Jesus on the cross and recognised Him for who He was and accepted in his heart the truth of his own sin, its consequence and the fact that Jesus can be his saving grace. From this place we can find joy; a joy that goes beyond any emotion or feeling. A joy that comes from knowing we are forgiven; we are whiter than snow; cleansed, accepted and loved. Even in all circumstances, “Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice.”. No matter what, we can have joy because of our salvation; because we can hold the Lord in our hearts and be cleansed by Him.
In your prayers as you commune with God, why not ask Him to show you what is in your heart? Spend time seeking and asking Him to teach you wisdom in the secret place and allow Him to weed out everything that is not of Him. We all need to continually ask God to purify and wash us, remind us of our salvation and help us work it out in every detail of our lives. Finally, we should ask for that joy that abounds in all circumstances when we truly hold the Lord in our inmost being.
• Ask today for wisdom in the secret place with God.
• Ask God to bless you with joy in every life circumstance.
